Brand New Gospel Mix : DJ Mista Trixx – Bring Down the House

madnessette

The last few months have been rather interesting, we have received more Gospel music than ever before in the history of our existence. There are a few possible reasons for this, either Gospel music in Kenya is on the uprise, or Gospel music in Kenya has changed its format and is now inclusive of many other styles and rhythms. I would really like to have a lengthy conversation with R-Kay and Kanji right about now.

That said one of my favorite tracks is a song called “Nime pendwa na Fundi wa Mbao” – which sadly doesnt feature on this mix, but DJ Dona slapped it on one of his old mixes.

As a company GetMziki has been contemplating and struggling internally to figure out where to classify these new tracks coming in from Kenya. A few months ago publishing one track from Chizi, or from Neema wasn’t a big deal – but we are talking about 50 to 100 new songs in less than 5 months. So you can imagine we have a real problem on our hands in terms of classifying this genre and group of artists. Because this music doesn’t really sound like your generic Gospel music – when you listen to half these songs you might as well be listening to Nonini, or JuaCali its only that the lyrical content is different.

So when Trixx sent me this mix today I was excited, at least someone was brave enough to compile a Gospel mix to help me table this dilemma. Am always looking forward to DJ Mista Trixx work – this is one mix thats completely different in terms of lyrical content. But in terms of BPM’s, tempo and production its just another Genge Mix :-) Am sorry but its the truth.

Either way you guys enjoy some Gospel – Get to go to church on GetMziki for a day or so – but lets talk about where and how we can classify these new sounds.

The gospel scene has by far overtaken the secular scene in Kenya. This guys are doing more shows, tours and selling more albums. I guess other artists need to borrow a leaf from this musicians they have embraced the different Kenyan cultures, the stage performances are breath taking to say the least and the music is appealing to their target market.

Personally I think this guys are writing history on the Kenyan music scene just look at the success of the recently held Groove awards. Am sure we will be having more “Gospel Songs” on Get Mziki in the near future. Watch this space

I have been looking forward for the day you would sample such a mix guys.I have just seen this mix today and I hope its going to drive me nuts just like their other samples. So far, I think that gospel music here in Kenya has surpassed the Secular category. Lets check them out.

1 guy wekaz a few gospel cuts on a mix and ati all of a sudden “gospel scene is taking over” yawn!!

  5. Nixxon says:

Yoo, its true gospel music in Kenya is surpassing secular music, a good way to grasp this fact, just go on youtube and compare the gospel tracks produced in 07 and up and Genge/Kapuka tracks produced at the same time. it’l be clear, gospel are doing way much better + its really high time musicians in Kenya Mature and stop singing about Kumang*na na kuenda club kukunywa, ukicheki, hakuna stuff za maana wanaimba… or better still, they should borrow a leaf from TZ and start singing some nice love songs… Finally, i think this mix is really creative and Id like to see Mista trixx doing his thang at a gig somewhere soonest!!

  6. Nonnie says:

This mix took me way back..I mainly listen to gospel music so I was extra jazzed to find this mix.I especially loved the last song in the mix, Koen Duncan totally rocks..
    Thanks!

I believe the artist simply classify themselves as Kenyan Gospel…which I find ftting..you can also call it Gospel Genge…as I have come to refer to all Kenyan urban music as genge whether secular or otherwise. Even Gospel music as we know it in the States and UK is not the traditional Gospel music sung in the church with a massive choir! If u listen to Marry Marry its basically RnB, Listen to Kirk and its Rap! Both artists are Gospel artist…..I think here Gospel is reference to the content and not the genre. It can be gospel on a kapuka beat or boomba beat, its still Gospel.

I love the drive in Kenyan gospel…this year the best awards was the Groove Awards by far!! Chagua La Teenies was canned! Look @ Kanji’s album launch @ Carni and compare it to Klepto’s album launch @ club Galileo!?

Ps that track “Nime pendwa na Fundi wa Mbao” by Zaidi ya Mziki…is big time!
