AKA Feat Diamond – Make Me Sing

It’s March already. We kick off the month with new music from South Africa’s AKA featuring Bongo Flava Music star Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania. I’m loving all this new collabo’s from various artists across the African continent and the seas.

We last featured AKA on the site with the hit single ‘Don’t Bother with Joh Makini that is a huge record.

“Make me sing” Is a dope record that will definitely do great numbers everywhere. The record was produced by Tud Thomas from TTP records.

Joh Makini ft AKA – Don Bother (**RECORD OF THE WEEK)

Joh Makini from Tanzania is really kiling the streets with hits after hits. On this latest offering that is a BANGER, he teams upo with South Africa’s finest rapper – AKA for the record “Don’t Bother”.

I like the Way Makini raps in swahili making it way natural and with his crazy punclines, makes his records stand out more. Both rappers go hard with dope lines.

Fredrick Bundala trasnaltes some of the bars from Joh Makini for those folks that do’t understand swahili

I have heard there is an award show and you are on the list?
I have heard you are being favoured on the playlists?
I have heard you are relatives with the journalists?
And what about these beefs; here and there?
I have no idea about beefs chief, I am keeping chickens
Where, who, when, who, when, why? Who am I, spy-like questions
Do you have WI-FI? I don’t have WI-FI chief, I have a wife
Does Nick (one of Weusi rappers and Joh’s young brother) write for you? I don’t know that kind of a pen, I write with a BIC
You release too many songs, I don’t remember releasing many songs, I release hits..

Mi Casa Ft. Sauti Sol – Tuale Fofofo

When I get the opportunity on Friday afternoon while at work, I like tuning in to DJ John’s Klub H2O show on Homeboyz radio and catch up on the new records out there. John always has tons of exclusives and new music that makes his shows one of the few I listen too. This past week, he premiered this record from SA’s Mi Casa. The record is a party anthem for sure.

Mi casa is a South African house band trio, made up of J ‘Something, Dr. Duda and Mo-T . “Home Sweet Home” is the name of their new album and one of the songs on the album is Tuale Fofofo featuring Kenyan trio Sauti Sol.

This will definitely be a big party record….

Xtatic feat Kwesta and Chelz – We Ryde

We had Xtatic as one of the Freshman 2012 Class . In between that time she’s released a couple of records which in my opinion were “do this” records that she was being advised to do by her the record company. We showcased Xtatic before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon and before her record label signing. Here is what I had to say when I showcased the Prep Track

Xtatic is one of the female MC’s on the come up in Kenya. I’ve listened to some of her songs and I’m really impressed with the growth considering she still hasn’t even reached her full potential. Xtatic is a remainder to those who claim our generation lacks rap talent, that there is definitely artists making moves. Listen and watch the video to the “Prep” track. This track has a real Hip Hop feel to it; Smooth and melodic . Xtatic is definitely more than just a female emcee to me. I don’t like comparing artists but I’d said she’s a mix of street edgy quality street music mixed in with a “trendy” perspective.

This new record “We Ryde” that features South African is classic Xtatic with that raw edgy feel that I came to love. There are enough fans who love this type of music and she brings it out well. This record definitely gets a permanent spot in my music playlist…..

Afrodisiac – Mzanzi House Jan 2012 Promo Mix (DJ TopDonn Exclusive ***)

I’ve known Donald for a while, like a really long time – I just never pictured him as a DJ until he was a DJ ha ha ha. One thing I respect about TopDonn is consistency and the lack thereof or disregard of the Kenyan Entertainment market (NO-PUN intended). I think a lot of Kenyan DJs in the diaspora spend a good portion of their careers trying to figure out how they can feed off this Kenyan entertainment scene.

The sad thing is that if you live in this OASIS called the US, there is so much money to be made around you, like why struggle to entertain 50 to 100 pals occasionally when you can just kill the local market you live in? I’ve always failed to understand that theory/rationale.

Donald was one of the few DJs I know who just went hard on his local Chi-Town market and kills it out there. He reminds me of one of boys in Atlanta called DJ Gazzelle. A complete metamorphosis of entertainment when you enter a Black club and realize the guy on the decks is actually Kenyan. You can imagine the look on my face when I blessed Vanquish in Atlanta with my presence one Thursday and found Gazelle on the one and twos… Sheiiit.. I went over and started asking for NAMELESS ha ha ha ha (just kidding).

Anyway point am making is if you are a good DJ and know your music as with some of these cats out there – then there is no reason you cant do what folks like Donald do? And to show you his diversity, I think TopDonn right now is probably the only “Kenyan” who kills it on the SA/DANCE music scene. Here is what I am currently listening to on my iPod. A 25 Min Mix showcasing the hottest tunes from the streets of Johannesburg & Durban, South African. Featured Artists include Dr. Malinga, Euphonic feat. Shota, Revolution feat. Relo and Liquideep.

DJ Sbu feat. Zahara – Lengoma (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Am still on this South African music journey and lately its been getting stronger and stronger… Currently I am jamming to this DJ Sbu track featuring Zahara (one of SA biggest songstress). The two artists are South Africa’s most respected musicians who collectively put up this crazy collabo of a track adequently titled LENGOMA.

In Swahili Ngoma means music or drum – if a french jama was to say Ngoma he probably would say Le’Ngoma ha! I lie. But it does sound promising if the fusion of Swahili and French would sound something like LENGOMA then we are in safe hands. This track is classified under South African House, so you can pretty much file it under that as opposed to KWAITO. Check out the Black and White Video – it almost makes you think DJ Sbu was the one singing LOL..

DJ SMAK – House Blends (Music of the gods)

It goes without saying I am deeply into South African house, its been a wanting feeling for about 4 years now since I discovered DJ Cleo, DJ Mujava and then eventually stumbled on Black Coffee and the likes. While I was in Kenya i discovered the fever is big in Kenya and I met some interesting DJs back there who pretty much just play house all day and night in various night clubs and bars in the City.

One of the few cats is DJ SMAK – Mix attached.

I told some DJ a few years ago, over time it wont matter how good a DJ you are, it will matter whether you understand music and where its headed. Currently there are all these hardcore bedroom DJS and studio DJs who are bad azz on the turntables but they dont know music. I mean DEADMAU5 is a good example… do you think the jama can scractch and spin? Probably not but he knows his music – and is a good brand and gimic. Anyway there is a void in this SA house and I feel like DJs like SMAK will fill in this void quick once they make this their forte – they will be kings in their own right.

Junguz like this music, events in San Francisco are normally jam packed with folks wanting this African blend of House thats different than anything they’ve heard… Anyway before I digress – DOWNLOAD this mix PAP!.
