Camp Mulla & Wonda Boy – Oh Ma Gad (***GetMziki Exclusive)

camp Mulla

I just got this track this evening so I haven’t really sat and marinated on the record before posting it. We all know Camp Mulla but make great records from what they’ve blessed everyone out there with.

I only listened to the record a few times but I can notice the similarities and resemblance of the overused ‘Camp Mullaish” kicks, snares, hi-hats arrangement, melodies and BPM song arrangement. I’m not really so sure about this track and the hype that surrounding it before its release. The jury is still out on my end.

“Oh Ma Gad” features Naija next superstar Wonda Boy. on the B side, the song’s video makes it a bit better to bump too.

Calvo Mistari – Mwanaume Ni Effort (***GetMziki Eclusive)

Calvo_2013

We’ve featured Calvo numerous times with various records over the past few years and I won’t really go into his background as we’ve talked about it in the past.

He’s one of the artists that we all know can make great records and tell stories like every few people can. I’ve talked about some artists who have a single they are trying to push and lacking that body of work. Calvo has that body of work and he definitely has the singles that people out there need to get familiar. In my opinion and this is just coming from me. Calvo Mistari needs to get a good management team that will showcase his music in an EP format and have it either for a free download or for sale.

“Mwanaume Ni Effort” is an example of what Calvo can do, but we all know he’s one of the few consistent artists who’s always releasing dope records. Life is all about growth and elevation. I rarely do this, but a question for the music pundits out there. What does Calvo need to do to make that slow transition into his peak.

For now, bump this heavy. The fella’s will definitely dig this 

Amani ft Radio and Weasel – Kiboko Changu (***GetMziki Exclusive)

Amani_GetMziki_2013

I’m always happy when we receive new music Amani and she’s always pushing the boundaries and always creating dope records. On “Kiboko Kyangu” Amani called on Ugandan bro duo of Radio and Weasel to join her as they talks about doing anything and everything for their lovers.

The record is a bass-bumping, snare driven instrumental backdrop which when coupled with the great lyrics from Amani featuring Radio and Weasel creates one of them clubs records. I’ve recently been complaining on how we have been receiving sub par records, but this record proves that there are artists like Amani out there who really take their time and ensure anything they give to their fans is good music. Yo ucan also tell that MAni really sings from the spirit.

Kiboko Kyangu is a definite club banger which showcases how a “from Uganda to Kenya” collaboration should be done. This is a straight banger……

Mimmo Feat Chiku – Rollacoaster (**GetMziki Exclusive)

mimmo_new_img

I’m sure when Mimmo entered the music scene, she knew the up’s and downs associated with the various systems whether dealing with fellow artists, media houses or record executives who would be sometimes rotten to the core. Through all this, I’m sure she clearly understands the whole idea of artists maturing. She has accomplished a lot even before releasing her major-label debut album and on “Rollacoaster” Mimmo returns to what makes her tick by grabbing Ulopa Ngoma for some solid track with more positives than negatives.

The record is a decent track with decent lyrics that is finding a few spins on my music playlist. One thing that stuck for me was how the producer Ulopa Ngoma switched sounds and added various elements throughout the track creating a “learning production” exercise. However from a fan and outsider perspective, I don’t know how everyone out there will perceive the production and record.

Colonel Moustapha – Lenga Stress (**GetMziki Exclusive)

I’ve been sitting on this track for the last few days really trying to see how to best be positive without bashing anybody. For this post I decided to get an excerpt of a track I had previewed late last year which perfectly summarizes “Lenga Stress”.

To me, this track should should have had a different theme, subject matter and above all, a different layout. The song sounds like hundred other songs out there and once again the producer did a sub par job when it came to ensuring the song’s overall feel and direction. The latter, makes me pose and ask this question; Do the artists, producers and management team sit and marinate over the finished product before releasing it. Don’t get me wrong, Colonel Moustapha has what it takes to make good records, but from the look of things, he’s taking five steps forward and eight steps backwards. With artists who release 2-3 songs a year, you cannot afford to release sub-par records. The system will eat you alive. Now, if you were an artist who releases 10-20 songs a year, the system can allow you to once in a while stumble, since you have a resume of making great records. My advice is that if you reasing an average of 3 songs a year, marinate on at least 4 different versions of the record for at least 4 months before letting the public hear the record.

Bottom line, I’m not really feeling this record.

Bamboo – Feel it

We’ve been getting a couple of record from Bamboo, The African Bantu and he’s definitely On the grind.

Everybody knows Bamboo can make great records and that he’s a beat on the mic. I think he just needs to package his products better by giving his fans, listeners and everyone out here his vast catalog in an album or free download. People out there need to hear some of what he’s been cooking in the kitchen..

You might be the best cook in the world, but if you don’t go out there, give and let people try people some of your samples, nobody will ever know what you can offer.

On “Kenya Feel it” he jumps on a sampled beat of Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight and Seals & Crofts’s “Sweet Green Fields” which was made popular by “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” by Busta Rhymes for a great mixtape record.

Jaguar – Kipepeo

It’s been a while since we featured Jaguar on the site and the last time we did saw, it was with “Kigeugeu”. I know many people insist that all his records sound the same and that he’s always shy to step out of his comfort zone. On the flip side, I can say that, he’s found his lane and he’s riding the wave until he hopefully gets another wave.

Most of his records have been produced at Ogopa Djs and people thought that they were supplying him with the same formula beats. Fast forward to Kipepeo where Jaguar steps from the Ogopa camp and grabs producer Phil at Main Switch Studios for his latest offering. He stepped from his normal team but everything about “Kipepeo” sounds and fells like an Ogopa Dj record.

Kipepeo which means butterfly in Swahili is a decent record, but it sounds and feels like a remake of “Kigegeu” and “Nikuskize”

Enjoy!!!

Ice Prince – V.I.P and Gimme Dat ft Burna Boy (****GetMziki Excluisve)

Ice-Prince-VIP-Art

Ice Prince released two brand records this week titled V.I.P and Gimme Dat which features Burna Boy , Olamide and Yung L . The 2 new tracks are off his forthcoming album, Fire Of Zamani which he plans on drop sometime this year.

V.I.P, Produced by Chopstix is a decent record the track has some Aboki sprinkle all over it. I can see it definitely getting tons of spins on the radio and in the clubs. Gimme Dat is one of those records that will probably slowly gravitate to people in due time. It also features Burna Boy, who like I said before is one of the Naija artists I’m feeling right now and we’ve featured him recently with Tonight and like to party.

For now listen and enjoy some exclusive new music from Naija land…

Size 8 – Mateke (**GetMziki Exclusive)

By now most of the people know that Size 8 had a spiritual calling and changed her life and made the shift to gospel music. We want to wish her all the best as she goes through this path of her life.

One of the first racks that mde her debut into the secular musical scene is “Mateke”, where the hook goes “Yesu amempa shetani mateke”.

This is a great record that shows that Size 8 can switch gears and confidently showcase her talents in any music genre. Good song with great vocals and the title of the song says everything.

DJ XP – MIXOLOGY

Kenya's First Lady Lucy Kibaki speaks to

DJXP or better known as Opareeeeee!!! (pun intended on the Opare and not Opore) and I grew up together in Eastlando. So there’s a lot to be said about relationships that are inspired from the past. We went to the same church (Catho), same schools (Jogoo Rd), played on the same grounds , probably katiad the same chiles (Bosbori LMFAO), borrowed the same bikes from the same guys in the esto… So I could say we go way back.

What I enjoy the most about our relationship is that each year when we meet up in a new city, we usually spend hours laughing up old stories. Unakumbuka, Unakumbuka, unakumbuka are the metaphors that fill the air when am hanging out with this dude. So recently when I was talking to XP I was telling him unakumbuka unakumbua ile Mix ya Mixology ulinimekia iko na tereeereee tereeee, I couldn’t explain it so I had to go find it (and luckily I’d had a vault since 2001).

Truth be told this is one of his greatest work from a collections perspective. Listening to this mix today I realize that DJying is a dying art or maybe a changing art form. Years ago when XP made this mix it made me feel the same way that I have felt this morning listening to the music on this set. I say DJ is a changing art form because I rarely listen to mixes today that make me feel a certain way.

For what its worth I am sure for the few who had listened to XP’s old sets when we was doing MIXOLOGY – you will appreciate this one.

ENJOY

DNA Feat Mr Nice – Tafuta (***GetMziki Exlusive)

I just received a couple of records on my email and I’m going through them trying to see which ones deserves a post.

One of the first records that I believe deserve to be heard is this new banger from DNA featuring Mr Nice. From what’s I’ve heard, Tanzanian Mr Nice is making a push again with the music thing and re-launching his career in Kenya under Grandpa Records.

They wasted no time, went to the studio and the result is Tafuta a stright party anthem

Enjoy

Sauti Sol – Still the One (**GetMziki Exclusive)

The last time we featured Sauti Sol on the site was with their track “Range Rover”. While other media sites while going ham on the record and playing the “we love” it bandwagon theme, we chose to call it as we saw it.

It’s one thing you know you will get with our song reviews. “Range Rover” as reviewed by Leo was a horrible record and we were honest and open about .Here is an excerpt on the song review by Leo.

“Seriously guys – RANGE ROVER!!! Really?
Truly I am embarassed and disappointed to say I was a SAUTI SOL fan. I felt like I could relate to the group, I felt like they represented a movement, a sound, a story. I felt the partnership they had with Wawesh at the time was probably the best thing since M-PESA. But you can’t tell me these are the same guys who made Lazizi and Blue Uniform? I actually refuse to accept that they have evolved and grown into this…

Fast forward to last week when they released this new record and they are definitely going back to the esence of the Lazizi and Blue Uniform days. We definitely got a banger here :)

Khaligraph Jones – Shiro (**GetMziki Exclusive)

Khaligraph_Jones_Get_Mziki

We featured Khaligraph Jones as part of the 2012 Freshman class and there is no point of me going back and stressing that he’s the future of Kenyan Hip hop. I keep on stressing that if you haven’t really downloaded “The Khaligraph Jones Chronicles” you need to do so.

Like I said before, he’s one of the future stars of Kenyan Hip Hop. He has an amazing body of work and all is missing from the pie is the breakthrough single. Here is what I said about K. Jones when I posted the “Best” track.

Shiro is a track that feels like the it single. The body of work is there. Once again, he’s one of the top 10 GetMziki 2012 artists whose offering us what we need.

Could all the Shiros, please play this loud :) . This is a banger…….

Bebe Cool- Coccidiosis (GetMziki Exclusive)

If you’ve been an avid follower of the site, you know we take pride in breaking artists, records , music movements and generally just giving readers and listeners out there a chance to enjoy great music before it’s gets overplayed on TV and radio.

Ugandan, Bebe Cool is no guest o the site and his music accomplishments and accolades are just to many for me to name. However music enthusiasts know that he’s always giving people out there good quality music which sometimes finds itself out to the masses. I’m always getting new music from his camp, but when I got “Coccidiosis” I was skeptical with the song title. However a first listen told me that this song deserved to be heard.

I’m putting my stamp on approval on this. For all the djs, you know the drill. You can either skip the download button and ignore the record or start giving it a few spins once everybody else jumps on the bandwagon months from now.

I’m yet to find out what “Coccidiosis” means. For now enjoy this club banger

Update from a comment by Ababa: Coccidiosis is a disease suffered by Chicken(from the sample in the beginning). What exactly he means. Probably telling someone off.

Chidinma_GetMziki

I’ve been listening to a few Naija music the last few days and will be featuring a few tracks in the next few days. One of the records is by Project fame winner Chidinma who we’ve featured before with Bless me and Kedike.

The remix to Emi ni Baller features Nigerian super star Wiz Kid for a great remix collabo.

There are a couple of tracks on my music playlist from Chidinma, who definitely naking the right positive moves on her quest to become the next big superstar in Naija music.

Collo Feat STL and Mimmo – Floss na Wewe

It’s rare that we showcase the same artist more than once in one week, but when we do so, it’s a great accomplishment, which really proves that the artist is putting in the necessary work. I’m taking about Collo, who is really releasing great records and doing the collabo thing with A list artists that many people wouldn’t have imagined; UNOENO.

On a personal level, I admire Collo on pushing boundaries and being bale to take listerners in in so many different directions

Floss na wewe is a laid back type head-nodding type of record with amazing production by Big Soul at Bern soft Studios. Collo is definitely on a quest to satisfy both his longtime fans and grab new fans that are still on the side lines peeping in.

Chiwawa – Millioni Kichwani (GetMziki Excluisve)

Chiwawa_GetMziki
Chiwawa is one of those artists that have great skill, dedication and appeal but have never really gotten the props they deserve. Maybe it’s their persistence to make music for the streets and avoid the straight to radio singles in fear of being labeled a sell-out. Could it also be that they do music as a side gig and they don’t really care about the album sales, show performance money and everything else that comes with making money in the music industry.

It’s something I have strongly insisted and preached and if you are an avid reader of the site, you know it’s one lane I see lacking in various artists who never really jump into that “underground” artist mentality to mainstream success. It’s a discussion that we always have with my fellow djs and artists.

Chiwawa has numerous records, videos and projects out there but how many people can attest to owning a full length album or project from him. How do you expect new fans to hold onto your music and get to know your story telling ability and your music making skills. The music world is built on singles which eventually push it into album sales and tours. One thing Chiwawa has to do is make his vast music catalog available to the masses in an easily acceptable format.

Over the past years he’s had decent records that just lacked the necessary push and promotion to make those songs into hit songs

Millioni Kichwani, produced by my friend, Babz on the Track is one of those dope records that will either find themselves in a record executives bin trash or end up in every djs and radio station music playlist. I’ll be curious to see how Chiwawa handles the promotion of the record

Mejja ft Madtraxx – Twen Zetu (GetMziki Faceoff ***)

mejja_vs_madtraxx

We have this feature called FACEOFF that we introduced a while back and although it’s not a consistent as would like it to be, it’s still a great way of showcasing records.

Like we said before when we had the Mejja Vs MadTraxx FACEOFF with “Poa” , the feature is to put two artists toe to toe on a basic poll. The idea is not to discredit one artist vs the other but rather to measure the value of different lyrical flow, composition and song writing.

Twen Zetu is a good track that finds Mejja and Mad Traxx going hard on what they are best known for; story telling. They each have separate verses to start off with and on the last verse they go back and forth with such amazing ease and lyrical flow. The duo of Mejja and Mad Traxx could do amazing things together as a unit. I’m sure enough people have thrown the whole idea of them doing a collabo album which from the amazing records they have out, would be a no brainer.

For now listen to Twen Zetu and let us know what you think… which of the two artists goes harder on the record

Dochi ft Ali Kiba – Imani (GetMziki Exclusive)

DOCHI_GetMziki

There is the old saying that if it ain’t broke, there is no reason to fix it. This definitely lies true for the classic Bongo Flava R & B artists and the numerous records that eventually became hits.

The number of emerging Bongo Flava artits are a dime a dozen and everyday we are getting new songs from that region. It’s so easy for an upcoming artists to grab a “classic” Bongo R & B production record and grab a seasoned artists like Ali Kiba to help push a record.

Imani is a great record that will definitely get spins. However, if Dochi stalls and fails to come up woth great records, his will just be another chapter among the many upcoming Bongo artists.

Bamboo, Abbas, Chiwawa – DNA ni TNA (GetMziki Mixtape Fridays)

Bamboo-Abbas_Chiwawa_N

It’s no secret that we always maintain a non partisan stance when dealing with various issues whether political, social or even music wise. It’s how we just maintain and still have maintained our past present and future connections and friendships.

I’m not really going to go into the whole time line and history of how the track came about. This post is not about that and nobody’s gonna come out victorious in the long run as we’ll make it into the one of those never ending debates. I’ll let the music speak for itself. We are also sitting on a few gems from Bamboo and Abbas that we’ll hopefully release to the masses in due time.

Can I be the first to say that we really need a few records from the trio. Bamboo, Abbas and Chiwawa are masters of this rap thing, as demonstrated by DNA ni TNA, which definitely will find some appeal to the party crowd or the conscious Hip Hop fans. It’s not five-mic material but it’s rating is way up there to showcase what happens when you mix great rhymes with quality production.

I din’t even know that I was going to post this track until a few minutes ago when I suddenly had an urge to listen to some Bongo Hip hop on my music folders and “Mikasi” was the first track.

Since It’s Thursday, I decided to post it for all the fans out there. This is one of the first tracks that really attracted me to Bongo hip hop and the clever word play and punchlines. I have a a few memories of me trying to decipher the chorus hahah

“Mitungi, blanti , Mikasi, kama wewe unataka kuvinjari nasi, basi mfukoni mwako uwe safi,”

Kus Ma ft Kanja – How High

Kus-Ma-ft-Kanja_How_High_GetMziki

Often, it’s the spontaneous tracks that spawn on to become great records. However the opposite side of the spectrum is also true. A perfect example is Kus Ma of Camp Mulla who grabs his comrade Kanja for some smokers themes record. The production on the record started right with Biggie sample but went down side really quick when the over used Kicks and snare combination that has been in a few Camp Mulla’s records came in.

I could see the record getting a few spins with the “How High” fans but for the crazed die hard hip hop fan, this is just another smoking rendition that we’ve heard countless times.
