Kayvo Feat Lonski – We Here Now

We are loving the current hip hop scene in Kenya. Please don’t call it a comeback. It never left. Everything goes in circles and it’s the perfect timing for it’s upward mobility especially in the mainstream.

On ‘We Here Now” Kayvo and Lonski jump on the Arab Muzik beat for some quality street music. It’s a defining statement to everyone out there that they are here now. Kayvo, currently signed to K-Nels Anglohili music label is an ill emcee who’s destined to do big things in the game. Let me copy and paste what Leo had to say about one of Kayvo’s track we previously posted. “The sheng is legit, the English is legit – to top it off you give a guy a sick beat and what you have is just CLASSIC material.”

There’s no doubt—Kayvo is one of the top best Kenyan hip hop artists out right now.

We will be showcasing some music next week from some of the top Kenyan freshmen hip hop artists out there. You can follow Kayvo on his Twitter

They did a great job on the video too. Shutouts to the graffiti street connect crew.

K-Nel – Mbele Tu Sana (GetMziki Exclusive)

k-nel

In the mixtape industry there is a term artists use called OPB (Other people’s beats), where you get an instrumental of a popular song out there and flip it. The result can be 50:50 in that you can do a flip of the song for it to sound horrible or you can rock it nicely such that it holds it own weight as compared to the original version. With the blessing of all parties involved, K-Nel jumps on P-Unit’s hit song “Juu Tu sana” and flips it to “Mbele Tu Sana” and the result is impressive. He even went ahead and recorded a video for the street single. The song ‘Mbele Tu Sana” is the first single off his upcoming street album entitled KenyaWood 2 that will be available for FREE download on 28 April 2009.

I’ve said time and time again that doing quality street albums and mixtapes is a sure way of establishing your street credibility and getting your name out there. You however have to make sure that you deliver a presentable package with the covers and song quality on point. I don’t really understand when artists have like 10 “singles” out and the label can’t even put out a compilation album or street album for the artist. K-Nel understands the essence of mixtapes and street albums, something I have been trying to convince a couple of Kenyan artists to embrace. Only time will tell !!!!!!

K-Nel Feat Bamboo- Obama Swagger

knel_bamboo_oswagger_v3

After the victory by Obama last year and the song “Swagger Like Us” by T.I driving the streets crazy at that time, I thought of a way of flipping the script to reflect that historic win. I immediately thought of the basic idea , ran it through a couple of artists, and the ones that came through first were K-Nel and Bamboo. They jumped in the studio to give their take on the 2008 elections “swagger” year and the result is a winner. Immediately the “Obama Swagger” song premiered on Homeboyz radio, the calls and comments coming from various sources was that the song had held it’s own weight as compared to the original version. This is one of those street songs that capture your everyday life and meant for everyone since we all got some type of “swagger” in us. Also, Bamboo is in talks to sign to K-Nels Stars limit roster. When people talk about African artists who are constantly and consistently creating music with a passion, one of the artists that fits that category is K-Nel. Born in Kenyan and currently living in Germany, he released his first major release “Voice Of Kenya” with the single “Mi Negro Lindo” that was featured prominently in various FM stations across EA. The video was on rotation on MTV Base and Channel O. His past hit songs include “Mimi Ni Hustler”, “Static Soldiers” Feat R & B legend Horace Brown and the current street anthem “Change The World (Obama Song)”

“Mi Negro Lindo” Feat Raquel (originally from Venezuela) shows the diversity of K-Nel’s Angohili Music, creating a unique Kiswahili/Spanish cross over.
