Raymond – Kwetu

I stumbled on this video this week and I’ve been playing this song for the last 5 hours over and over again. Being from Tanzania and seeing some of the sights and scenes that they picked on this video touched my heart deeply. I respect what Raymond did here, more importantly I respect the storyline, because sometimes you be dating someone who doesnt really know where you are from and you are too scared to let them know who you really are.

Great song and video Ray…

Dan Mixa- Straight Outta Bongo (Bongo Flava Mix)

StraightOuttaSomewhere (2)

Dan Mixa sent me this mix a few weeks ago and now posting it. WIth so many djs out there and so many mixes, it sometimes hard to differentiate one dj mix from the other one since generally it’s the same records sequenced differently. I’m naturally biased when it comes to dj mixes, in that I’ll listen and only post dj mixes that have new music and exclusives and that out of the studio type of music that is available out there. I like to keep abreast on new artist, studio and new records that will be future hits.

Dan Mixa is a dj who apart from playing records, breaks records and gives you that exclusive music that keeps you in tune on what popping in the East African music scene.

Straight Outta Bongo is a Bongo Flava Mix that is loaded with tons of exclusives interlaced with current club bangers. Wit hthis you are guaranteed to be in tune with what’s poppin in the Tanzanian music scene

Joh Makini – XO and I see Me

First and foremost this are not new records. If you like that good music you probably have this on your music catalog. This two record were nominated for best Hip hop song for the Kili Music awards and that’s huge.
Joe or Joh as some call him had his debut in 1997 but it really wasn’t until 2004 when he became an essential artist in the region when he released “hawapendi”. In 2006 he released Chochote Popote which ultimately went to cement his reputation as a formidable Bongo Flava artist in the region.

For all the fans of Joh makini out there enjoy this records. XO features Gnako and you know when the two pair up it’s always a dope record.

Joh Makini lines best describes this song

Lyrics kali, msanii mkali, beat kali, ngoma kali, flow kali.. kila kitu kali kama hujaipenda hii song wewe sio mkali.

Yamoto Band – Nitakupwelepweta

I’ve had a folder of Yamoto band’s music for a while now and have been rocking to various GREAT records from the group.

“Nitakupwelepweta” is DOPE RECORD!!!!! Sick vocals by the group over a great beat. This is crazy… #BANGER. Good visuals too. Taking it back to DOPE bongo-flava EAST AFRICAN MUSIC with the dancing and colorful scenes.

Rabbit King Kaka ft Rich Mavoko – Njoo

Rich Mavoko to me really sounds too cliche’ not to take anything away from his talents but truthfully its going to be really hard to distinguish between Rich & Diamond pretty soon. For what it’s worth these new upcoming KE vs TZ collabos are going to be thrilling.

Yamoto Band- Tembo

Yamoto band is a group that is from Tanzania that has been makin strides in the Bongo music scene. It’s a group comprised of four young talented artists and are well known for hits like Ya moto, Nitajuta and Niseme.

I’m not really a fan of artists that go from unknown to famous off the strength of a viral hit, then after everything has cleared up, nothing else comes out from the artists. I’m all about full projects (body of work) accompanied with slow progressive growth and Yamoto band is a good example of that. If you love that soulful music that is non -hyped and just good music, you will definitely live Yamoto Band’s bongo-flava music.

Ali Kiba – Mwana (Lamar Refix ***)

Lamar is a genius, or better yet Lamar has figured out a way to make Tanzanian music flavorful and I am loving it all the way to the bank. On these types of posts I dont even want to say much, just listen to this rendition of a classic into something much more urban/western/dance like and essentially what I call – AFRICAN POP / AFROP.

Play this loud wherever you are… enjoy

Tanzania Bila Madawa – PSA

If anyone has been following the tragic, disturbing and probably unfortunate career of Ray C then this song shouldn’t be surprising to you. I am one of the fortunate few who has spent time with Ray C in person and also seen her electric performances live. So this part of her life has been a little painful for me to watch unravel and see her strugglel through it, on a personal level. To me I think Ray C made it okay for Tanzanian female artists as well as teen girls embrace their sexuality or feminism. Basically Ray C in my opinion made it okay for many Tanzanian women to feel sexy and be sexy in public. I think the industry owes her a lot, because her contribution both musically and personally from how she lived her life – really helped the country make some great strides in coming to terms with sexism.

Anyway fast forward to this year and it looks Ray C is steadfastly making a come back to music and is actually making some public appearances here and there. I’ve shared a recent interview I saw on Youtube with her opening up about substance abuse in public probably for the first time. So its only right that this track follows on the heels of some of these types of news headlines.

Hiphop/Bongo Flava in Tanzania is going through a transformation of sorts. For some reason drugs have become a prevalent theme in the music industry in the region and now some artists are standing up against this. This is a collaboration from some of the great artists produced by one of my favorite Tanzanian producers – LAMAR.

Get and feel the song here:

And just for kicks here is a recent interview of Ray C on the Sporah show, recorded in June 2014.

GetMziki – Promo Only September 2014 Edition

With so many things going on, this September issue of Promo Only comes a few weeks late, but better late than never.

With so many artists and tons of records being released on a weekly basis, it’s sometimes so hard to fully enjoy and digest records. Added with the hundred of records we receive from artists, we started having a monthly showcase of songs that we sifted through to find the cream of the crop that we believe deserve a few spins. The result is a 18-track compilation with a few bonus tracks. We showcase tons of records on a weekly basis and with everyone being busy with their daily lives, we decided to start showcasing records that are exclusive releases, chart setters, songs that will be future hits, present hits and everything else in between. Consider this as a music playlist to keep you abreast on what’s popping especially in the East African music scene.”

Spacio – Moyo Wangu

It’s funny Spacio is actually the name of a really small Toyota car in Africa, so I am hoping Spacio is not really looking at himself as a small fish. I got this track from Spacio a few months ago but truthfully there is just too much music to go through these days. I’ve eventually found a formula to sample and listen to all these tracks and behold Spacio made it through to my ears. Spacio is a new artists from Tanzania and from the sounds of it, he is on the right track to be competing with the big boys.

To me this is a feel good mellow record that content-wise seemed to resonate well with me.

Shilole – Paka La Bar (GetMziki Exclusive **)

Shilole is making some noise in Tanzania lately and I can see why, when you listen to this classic thats almost a mix of Bongo Flava and taarab it makes sense (or even a mix of kingwedu). Paka la bar (direct translation would be Bar Cat lol) ideally just means a dude who is always on the scene. I guess its safe to say that women no longer like the “paka la bar”

Enjoy this big tune.

Diamond feat Davido – Number One Remix (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

We dropped this track a few months ago and declared it a winner by all means. It appears we weren’t the only ones ranting and raving about this crazy joint, Davido just killed it by collaborating with Diamond and elevating the joint to the next level.

Right now it looks like DIAMOND could do no wrong, big ups to the Bongo Flava king, he is definitely running Tanzania right now.

Dochi ft Ali Kiba – Imani (GetMziki Exclusive)

There is the old saying that if it ain’t broke, there is no reason to fix it. This definitely lies true for the classic Bongo Flava R & B artists and the numerous records that eventually became hits.

The number of emerging Bongo Flava artits are a dime a dozen and everyday we are getting new songs from that region. It’s so easy for an upcoming artists to grab a “classic” Bongo R & B production record and grab a seasoned artists like Ali Kiba to help push a record.

Imani is a great record that will definitely get spins. However, if Dochi stalls and fails to come up woth great records, his will just be another chapter among the many upcoming Bongo artists.

Erica Lulakwa – Close to You (GetMziki Exclusive **)

I am kinda proud to post this song today because Erica just so happens to be a good friend of mine currently based in San Francisco where half of Getmziki lives. First time I met Erica and we talked she told me about her music and all I could reiterate to her was just be yourself. Don’t try to come out with some R&B album it will just backfire. So truthfully I never had the opportunity to sit and sample her music until a few weeks ago when she released her first single off her upcoming debut album.

Honestly I love it, I love the work put into the first production, the time invested and overall the marketing approach. Just watch the quality video and the eye candy they had to fly to Los Angeles to get to fit into the video. I personally think its amazing. This is evidence that when you stick to what you are good at, you definitely will have some room in this huge musical universe. Erica is not new to music and media however, she worked at KISS-FM in Tanzania, Trinity and at TBC (Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation) while pursuing her passion for music on the side. She released a single a few years back titled “Tafakari” and since she’s found her way into the US and currently wrapping up her album.

From this song you can tell she is heavily influenced by the Angelique Kidgoz and has a knack for Zouk sound. For now listen to this relaxed banger and give us your thoughts.

AY feat Lamyia & Romeo – Speak with ya Body (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

So a few months ago AY was in the West Coast touring and we briefly spoke over the phone. He made his trip here seem really modest and humble and soon after he called me from the airport to say goodbye. Its funny I was thinking back about 10yrs ago when artists would get the opportunity to come to the US, many would never go back. Today artists could careless about staying or being in the US. Artists are so comfortable running their careers back home, so much that they can fly to the US to collaborate on a track and then fly back home…

Here is a perfect example of what the future of African Urban Music holds for artists who can nurture strategic relationships with different Western Artists. Now I accept the fact that ROMEO hasn’t had a hit in years but it still doesn’t change the fact that he is not one of the most accessible folks right now. There are other D or C listers you’d have a harder time getting to collaborate on a track or get clearances but I am just fascinated at how AY pulled this off. I am more fascinated at the fact that he stayed true to his Tanzanian roots and killed his verse in SWAHILI.

If you ever got to see the original pictures of this music video shoot, you will have noticed that Megan Good was somewhere on the production set. That’s because Lamyia is Megan goods sister so sis was somewhere around supporting family. The track was produced by Riley from Checkmate and the video done by the Outliers, Directed by Shai and William Tikki.

Professor Jay – Kama Ipo (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

I dont know if I have ever put it out there publicly that I really love Professor Jay, not just as an artist but as a person. For realz I really really love this cat. I can spend hours with this cat on the phone just laughing coz the guy is just an infectiously funny interesting guy, with a lot of knowledge and interesting things to say about life and his experiences. Honestly once you get over his position in the market place and the fact that he is a very successful Bongo Flava artist, once you get him real comfortable to become himself – Joseph Haule is eventually just an interestingly honest calm funny guy.

So the fact that I am all jazzed up about the man is not directly related with the fact that this track is just a hot azz track. Prof collaborated with Fish Crab Cook Out on this banger to deliver what I think is undoubtedly the next sing along track in Tanzania. 41 Records/G Records or Fish Crab Cook Out are on to some next level production right now. I like how these guys just defined a sound that I can readily identify as Tanzanian Bounce.

To be real honest right now I am like a baby in a topless bar, itching to release this track so lets go hard on this one – its a friday, if your a DJ rip this and GO HARD on the crowds tonight. On every part Jay say Kama IPO – KILL the faders and let the crowd learn that life is about ups and downs… But if you got it.. you’ve got it 🙂 Kama Ipo, Ipo tu.

I had to share some of the images I got from the production shoot.

For some reason Jay always likes shooting next to Mkokoteni's ...

Although I do hope all these cars being flossed here are Jay's ha ha ha and not rentals.

Sidenote: Its amazing how a country that has problems with power, water and other major economical problems currently. Has a 3% population that lives way above their means and feels nothing about the rest of the country… It always jazzes me when I look at the inequalities and the disparities between the different communities in Tanzania… Interesting times in that country right now.

Mr Blue – Tila lila (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Mr Blue

Finally what I was waiting for, a song that celebrates nothing but pure alcoholism lol. Seriously when you listen to this song back to back you will realize two main things 1) its very repetitive, 2) he only spits about 4 to 5 bars lol. Okay enough clowning, Mr. Blue or on this video more like Mr. Red has grown up so much, I almost thought his music wouldn’t grow with him at all. Its amazing how he has reshaped his brand to accommodate his old fans (mainly tweens) and his new fans this new age youth that like a lot of western sounding music.

There are various parts of this song that seem like they have been engineered (audio or vocals) and then there are parts that he seems to be raw so I am slightly confused. In a way I could hear T.I.D all over this track especially when he pulls his cords in between the chorus. Either way this is a cool club track I would imagine, its a feel good song with no important message to send forward ha ha ha but please lets remember that KERORO made NONINI’s career in Kenya. So to me it may appear anytime you sing about being drunk or about boozing – then you might have a winner… (pass the courvoisier)

Mo plus feat JohMakini – Xray (GetMziki Exclusive **)

I got this crazy Tanzania music I need to push out and I apologize to all artists and producers who’ve been waiting for months for me to post their music. Sometimes life happens, that said lets get into this ridiculous sample. Moplus feat JohMakini (who we just posted a few days ago) on this track called X-ray which is actually off an album appropriately titled “baba wa ukoo” Vol 1. It looks like there is an Arusha uprising of producers or maybe this one producer who loves sampling all these East Coast beats. I dont know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, the jury is still out on this one but frankly it makes the music sound a little bit better – but at the same time I feel like originality is being lost.

For what its worth bless this track let me know what you think.

Ally Kiba – Dushelele (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Okay we are back in business, we decided to take a route we have been avoiding for years simply because we like to have better control of our music files but I am sure this too will change in the next few months or years once they get bought out. So over the next few weeks we will be migrating our music to soundcloud and also changing the settings on previous tracks that are still using our SkyDrive service.

That said let me bless your Friday with this new Ally Kibas. Every time you see a Bongo Flava track it means Alvin is alive. Alvin has been low key for weeks if not months but as if to resurrect himself through this banger. it almost makes it worth it that he goes in and out of my life lol.

Ally Kiba is a genius and I think after listening to this track over and over again and watching the video. I realise he just set the bar again for the next two years for all the Tanzanian R&B sensations and aspirational artists. This feels like Fally Ipupa and then on the Flip side it feels like I am sitting on a Mkeka listening to Taarab (not that I do that anyway). Dude is just good or he has good people around him advising him on what kind of music or sound to put out.

*The quality of this track my not be up to GM standards but we will surely update soon.

Mike Tee (Mnyalu) – I love you (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

I am not so sure how I feel about this new Tanzanian sound. Alvin put this together and it was great but the more I listen to this track am kinda confused with the whole Auto tune usage and the new flavored beats. The track will definitely grow on you the more you listen to it but my initial impulse was WTF. Considering I have always been an avid Mike Tee fan.

Mike Tee hails from my hometown (DODOMA) actually where my moms is from so by default I am inclined to support the cat. Mike Tee also known as Mnyalu is one of the few artists who started his career in a church choir, somehow found a way to get into Bongo Flava and he has been killing it ever since.

Quick Rocka Feat Q-Jay – Bullet

This song is not new but has been riding strong in the streets of Tanzania for a while now. It’s one of them songs I call “street anthems”. My promise to everyone in 2010 was to introduce people to “new artists” that were slowly but surely grinding hard. All I’m gonna say is remember the name, “Quick Rocka”.

Quick Rocka a.k.a MR FAST is an upcoming young rap star from the streets of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Starting his journey at the tender age of 14, Quick Rocka now 19 has stunned many older more mature and established rappers at his school whenever he performed in various talent shows. Accompanied by Chieph, Mo’ and Dau, the boys formed a crew by the name of THE ROCKAZ. They agreed upon an identical name “ROCKA” preceded by their nicknames so as to show their personal identities and uniqueness within the group. The Rockaz released their first single ROCKAZ ANTHEM early 2009. The song was well received and performed well on the local charts and officially marked the the foursome’s arrival into the index of Tanzania’s elite rap artists. Quick Rocka was noticed by MJ Records and signed almost instantly, following an explosive radio interview that impressed the CEO of the record label. Under MJ Records, Quick Rocka is composing a solo album and his first single from that album is BULLET(Courtesy of Manorionline)

Some of his lines on the first verse summarizes who “Quick Rocka” is

“Kwenye hii game nasafisha nakomaa kisanii,
Kama Quick Rocka ndo nawika nani hanisikii, (weeee!)
Kama unaifeel track keep it real,
Play it don’t stop thats the deal,
Kama hunipendi i don’t mind just chil,
Lakini naamini one day utanifeel”

AY feat Mwana FA – Usije Mjini (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Man, I have been low key for a few weeks – sometimes life happens and you have to attend to life first and then get back to your thing. I am glad that Alvin and Dona were able to hold down the fort coz some of the other contributors including myself have just been too low key.

Anyway I’ve been getting a lot of new music from Hermy B who is an emerging Bongo Flava producer currently responsible for many of the hits coming out of the Tanzanian Studios. Actually the previous post by Alvin – Kidum feat Lady JD was produced by Hermy B.

A.Y is my personal friend and for years we’ve enjoyed a symbiotic relationship. At some point I told him I think he is changing his style too much. I felt like he was going pop with trying to be too hiphop – but often he reminds me that when he released YULE! produced by Steve Jean he was going for a different sound. I mean AY has always been reinventing the wheel and trying and testing new things in Tanzanian hiphop and for most part they always seem to work because he is still relevant in the market place.

This collabo (although I understand they did the song together and hence would like to share the song title as in AY and Mwana FA as opposed to featuring – minor details really)

This song is fiyaaah give it a listen and let us know what you think.
