DJ Kaydee – Lethal Kenyan Hip Hop 1 Mix (Mixtape Fridays)

Kaydee has been featured on the site before with his mixes. When most djs are following each other on the type of mixes, I tend to ONLY listen to specific types of mixes. Here is an excerpt when we featured Kaydee and how he avoid the “group mentality” by having dope mixes that few djs can do.
“The whole Genge/Kapuka and pop mixes has been done – there is an over saturation of so many Similar mixes floating around the internet in one form or the other. So whats going to be your differentiator? I have told the same thing to a couple of out DJs I like out there, I keep telling them its too cloudy out there you need to clear things out by being one of the few DJs who can stand out.”

This Kenyan Hip Hop Mix cleary makes Kaydee stand out. This has been on constant repeat in my car the last few months. A tracklisting is also available for all those die hard fans who love knowing what they are listening too.

Dj Kill Bill – Mtaa Vinci Code #254THROWBACKS (*GetMziki Mixtape Fridays)

artworks-000085480465-2s6b6j-t500x500

Dj Kill Bill released this mix yesterday and I have been bumping to it ever since. He’s been on his releasing some dope thought about structured mixes like the “Best of Nas” mix he released last week which I’m still bumping heavy.

I’m not hating but with so many djs structuring their mixes the same way (African Music-with 80% being Niaja tracks, Dancehall/Reggae Hip-Hop and EDM ), I’ve stopped listening to dj mixes unless it’s something different, specific and theme based.

Kill Bill can relate to that and instead of doing the same ol cookie cutter same songs/mixes that are featured in every dj set, he gives us some dope theme based mix. 254THROWBACKS is a really great mix that takes the listener through all the dope classics of Kenyan Music. Kill Bill also provides the track listing for everyone out there and visual graphics to accompany the mix, which makes mixes stand out from everyone else out there. For more of his mixes and the tracklisting to this dope mix check out his soundcloud page.\

Kill Bill, keep the theme based mixes coming…..

Mixtape Fridays: DJ Mista T – UTAKE PART 1 2013

artworks-000052600447-ymnitz-crop

In this 2013 music world and the blossming of djs and music in general, there are a dime a dozen dj mixes and mixtapes out there.

I’m very picky and there are only a few select djs that I can honestly say I listen to their mixes. One of them is Dj Mr T, whose mixes are always intermixed with new exclusives, dance floor packers and various records that you will not hear on your local radio station or get on any other djs playlist. So when Dan hit me up the other day with a link to this new mix, I was slow to jump to it but got a chance to do so today.

One thing I cannot stand is when djs have a 2-3 minute drop as an intro which 9 out of 10 times is the same old drop that they have been having on their past mixes, which makes for boring listening. Mr T avoids all that by jumping into the mix with one of my favorite slept on tracks by Vanessa Mdee – Closer .

Dj Mr T gets an A in my books as he still holds the line for those still in love with exclusive records and new music. Alot of the music on the mix has been featured on the site which speaks volumes on our goal on providing exclusive music and breaking artists. This mix will definitely start any party with a bang.

Dubb DJS – Zouk Fix (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

We are currently overwhelmed with the number of mixtapes and mixes we have recieved from DJs all over the world. Truthfully very few of these will or actually do see the light and day in most of our posts. The reason is two fold, 1) We specifically post singles unless something stands out of the crowd and 2) we cant support the sheer volume of the mixes DJs send us. Other reasons however may include the quality of the mixes and the selection of the music in the different genre’s.

Either way we finally found a home for most of the mixtapes released unless something stands out of the crowd like this mix here. Allen aka DJ A Dubb is not only a friend but a partner in many other things (Heineken Drinking Federation Club). I told A Dubb one day that you cant call yourself a DJ in my opinion if you don’t have two things – 1) A Mix CD with you all the time (your own), 2) A resource online for your work (mixcrate, soundcloud, your own blog eta). The world has changed and you have to change with it, you cant go to an interview and tell the employer you will bring your resume later, you go to an interview ready and armored. Seems A Dubb took me seriously and 12months later two highly circulated mixtapes and a world of online mixes later I realize he means business.

The Dubb DJs are a group of 3 brothers all part of the HDFC as well, but mostly or probably the last DJ crew in the US to be formed and to exist simply by virtue of skill (and of course kinship). Actually there are very few or rare DJ Units in the US, its hard to find collective skill or partnerships in one area – DJs tend to compete amongst each other out here which is kinda pathetic at times. Either way I think The Dubbs would be the next best thing to watch out for in the US Diaspora market. This Mix validates everything I have been asking for in a long time – which is – just good music. Music I can sit down with my folks and listen to, because lets face it I am aging and I am tired of changing the station when I am in the car with my folks or my daughter. The truth is that we are all aging and unfortunately some of our taste makers are not aging with us, and hence the quality of the craft still sits where it was 10 years ago.

I stopped judging mixes based on quality of mixing a while back – I now judge music and mixes based on sound, genre and music selection which I think in my opinion was well covered here. The Dubb DJs will be handing out these mixes in Las Vegas this weekend for free to some lucky party goers – however if you have good bandwidth grab a copy right now… and enjoy some grown folk urban music..

Ps. I also want to pay tribute to one cat that I probably have never posted here but his work doesnt go unnoticed DJ Spinz (http://dj-allanspinz.podomatic.com/) is one cat I feel that just needs to be recognized coz he doesnt really do things for the hype or fame – I see this cat as one cat who does things for himself and to make himself better each day. Allan Guto I salute you, you have heart and I love the fact that you consistently update your Podcast. We have a project almost done 9 MIXTAPES – www.9mixtapes.com where we will hopefully show case a lot more of your current work but I honestly respect your hustle. To all other cats – the INTERNET is your friend, please EMBRACE it and post your work somewhere – push your brand before you get to us. Respect!!!

A Touch Of Africa – Kabugi the DJ (GetMziki African Mixes ***)

I grew up in the same Hood/Mtaa as Kabugi, actually we went to the same church in Buru phase v/phase iv. It was called Catho – or Catholic Church of Buru Buru. We probably fkuzad the same chics and shared the same rounda festivities and ball sessions. Although if I think long and hard Kabugi lived in phase iv which was okay but it just wasnt phase v. He he he phase iv had all the nice chiles, actually phase iv and phase iii or phase ii had all the chiles in Buru. Phase v had all the hot jamas (evidently).

Anyway I digress! My point here is that I’ve known this cat for a long time. Kabugi was one of my first Mlevi.com users and contributors when we were on version 1.3. Its amazing how time flies since 2001 to date thats almost 9 years ago when we were building our first Kenyan social network homie. But real talk am proud to know that the Internet has really lived up to its promise – ensuring people always stay in touch and in communication. Kabugi and I don’t talk much but when we do he will always drop a mix here and there – Personally I am never really fascinated by new school mixes… its the old stuff that he did that always has me locked in.

Hopefully when we finish 9mixtapes I will get the opportunity to share a lot of stuff he has done but today i am compelled to share this Touch of Africa mix that I have been playing in my car over and over and over again. Funny enough he did this in 2006 which is just amazing in itself. Thats why I feel like a lot of these African songs and sounds are so timeless. You cant listen to a 2006 Genge mix today and tell me it sounds as fresh today!

This mix has it all, it has your daily dose of Lingala, Magic System, Coupe De cale back in the day… Anyway real talk Kabugi this mix is official. Thanks for sharing/ Keep doing what you do!
