P-Unit – L.O.V.E

p_unit_img_01

The video for this recent record from P-Unit is to be released sometime this week. On this record the trio of Frasha, Gabu, and Bon-Eye fuse their classic Genge feel with some Kwaito sounding beat for their latest offering that talks about love.

I love what P-Unit is doing with the whole idea of fusing different genres of music. However, I couldn’t really finding my footing on this song at all. Maybe it’s one of those records that grows on you. Only time will tell….

P Unit feat Collo – You Guy (***GetMziki Exclusive)

The Kenyan trio P-Unit are slowly builds anticipation for thier second official album Wagenge Hao Tena with the release of a brand single 'You Guy”. Missing from our pages since we last posted the club anthem Fresh with Klear Kut, the trio return with a bang. The trio's style and wordplay combined with a feature from Collo and a Decimal records beat bring us a track fused with some dancehall, hip-hop and Genge.

According to their press release ” Bon eye said, “Our music prowess and choice to pursue musical career was influenced a lot by the musical trends of the 90s and so with this track we want to take our fans back into that era through a clever blend of ‘Ragamuffin’ and our ‘Genge’ style of music.” P Unit is set to drop their second album “Wagenge Hao Tena” in October this year. “To launch our second albu

m, we plan to have select local and international tours to engage with our fans who have continued to support our music over the years” concludes Frasha.

Why lie, P-Unit and Collo are creating some of the most diverse, dope and most most innovative work the music industry has seen in a minute. To the whole team, I hope there is much much more where this came from.

To all the music fans out there, I wanna see if people know their music. What song has been sampled in the new P-Unit track.

Certified hit single, no doubt about it. I can see djs all over adding this to their Serato playlist like yesterday:). We have the instrumental and acapella, so for all the producers and re-mixers out there hit us up for the exclusives. Klear Kut Feat P-Unit – Fresh (**GetMziki Exclusive)

Klear Kut from Uganda recently released their newest collabo with Kenyan’s trio P-Unit describing it as a “Perfect way to start a new week and a new month”. It’s a perfect way to enjoy your music Monday.

I won’t lie but this track had me moving from beginning to end. This track was definitely more than fresh. The hook is catchy and I like the way they traded bars back and forth alternating between the two camps. Will this be an anthem in the ‘disco”. Only time will tell.

Get into it and enjoy!!!!

P-Unit Feat Sauti Sol – Gentleman

In the current music industry, collabos are key to penetrating some markets and different fan bases. However some collabos seemed forced and it’s not too many collabos that breathe freshness. One of the collabos that I’ve been riding to that breathe’s freshness is “Gentleman” by P-unit Feat Sauti Sol. I can honestly say the pairing on this track works perfectly. P-Unit exhibits an impressively smooth and lyrical flow and delivery, which perfectly merges with the beat. Production on the track was done by producer extradionare Robert Kimanzi aka R Kay who has produced tons of hits for East African Artists.

The first time I heard the track, I knew that “Nipate baby kwenye bar, uliza shorty what u drinking” will be a common line that most guys will soon be using. With this track, P-Unit proves that they can shift gears from working solo to collabos but still maintain a feeling of ownership throughout any project.

Enjoy!!!

P-Unit feat Gaza – Usikonde

In Tanzania they have a term they use to let you know life is too short to be stressing over some bullshit. Its a relatively new term (well to some of us) but essentially when a Tanzanian tells you, usikonde bro! it means don’t stress about it. I guess the term spilled over to Kenya because Uskonde is on P-Units album and currently is one of the few tracks I’ve been listening to lately over and over again. Its one of those tracks that helps me stay focused on what I need to do and get by regardless of the bs around me sometimes.

You need some tracks that just help you overlook the small stuff – Usikonde!

Nonini Feat Mahatma, Frasha, Bonnie, Gabu and Chidi Benz – Kadhaa (Remix)

I will start off this weeks mixtape Friday, with Nonini’s Kadhaa remix. This song is not new (It came out last year in July last year), but the video just came out this week and someone hit me up asking for this track. The Remix features Mahatma, Frasha, Bonnie, Gabu and Chidi Benz. I cannot really say too much about this song since it’s a hot track!!!!. One thing I promised myself is that in 2010 I will let some songs talk to the readers and listeners. The crazy and great punchlines from all the artists are just too many for me to mention but I gotta say that Mahatma and Frasha killed it crazy!!!!!!.
Mahatma did it for me when he says “Sijaona kitu ya bure tangu maziwa ya Nyayo”.

Nonini has also embraced the net really well in terms of pushing his music. and videos. Like he always says ‘Big Idea”. Check out what he wrote on his youTube page about the video

“Another Pro Habo/ Big ideas joint…..actually we did this video as a joke! We were shooting Chidi’s video for chaguo langu and since he was in town, nonini and willie came up with this simple concept of Kadhaa remix. Why not shoot the video while the boys are chilling watching the original on a back ground screen. INITIALLY this video wasnt meant for tv but it came out so superbly we decided why not release it on air…..The boys kama kawa out did themselves big up kila mtu ule ali contribute to this project! Big up Mash Auto for hooking us up with the LIMO!….”

P-Unit Feat Nonini – Hapa Kule (GetMziki Exclusive)

I want to take this opportunity from the GetMziki team to wish everyone a festive holiday season and also to thank everyone for all the support in 2009.

We just got this track a couple of days ago and everyone has been busy with family, but it only right to showcase the track before the new year. On this song, I’ll let it breathe for itself since its straight fire!!!!!!. Like the streets say, IKO!!!!!

On this new track, “Hapa Kule” from their debut album “Wagenge Hao”, P-Unit comprising of Bonnie, Frasha and Gabu go hard on the Musyoka beat for a hot track that really perfectly closes out the successful 2009 year for both P-Unit and Nonini. They are a tight team that are always promoting and supporting each other, something you rarely see nowadays. One thing I also love about the group is that they are really humble and down to earth guys who love making timeless music that rarely follows any industry formula. They have also embraced the internet in a positive way (The “Hapa Kule” video debuted online the same day the song was released) and 2010 looks like the year that they show everyone out there that they a force to be reckoned with in the industry and that they are here to stay. The video is also hot!!! making this the next club anthem from the P-Unit camp.

Enjoy his track that is currently heavy on the streets radio and clubs.

Brand New: P-Unit feat Collo and Blavion – Rush hour

punit_rushhour

The perfectionist he is – Musyoka sent this song last week, however over the weekend he was listening to the track at a popular nightclub and somehow heard some mixing that was off. So he pulled the song off the record pool list in order to rectify the sound and certain portions of the track. To me the song sounded the same – I honestly can’t tell the difference but I guess thats what makes him good at what he does.

P-Unit collaborated with Collo and Blavion to pull off this exhilirating track. Immediately I heard this track I called Lovy (down in Los Angeles) and told him Lovy real talk you need to be weary – this Logombas ship is about to be rattled a little. You see to me I think there are artists who have been comfortable somewhere in a corner because no one has challenged their style. Logombas to me got bored of their style and technique – hence released the well recieved QUEEN – which has been an instant hit all over the world.

This RUSH HOUR track is pure testament that the talent in Kenya is multi versed, multi levelled and very easily replicated (I am not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing). I think also Nameless needs to watch out 🙂 First because it seems Musyoka can hack Kapuka beat anyday, but more importantly because to me P-Unit seems like one of those groups that can do anything – Right now I am definately watching out for anything they will be doing. Their debut album is definately going to be a must have…

Chap Chap ….. Kila mtu avuke na wake – RUSHHHH HOUR!!

K-Nel – Mbele Tu Sana (GetMziki Exclusive)

k-nel

In the mixtape industry there is a term artists use called OPB (Other people’s beats), where you get an instrumental of a popular song out there and flip it. The result can be 50:50 in that you can do a flip of the song for it to sound horrible or you can rock it nicely such that it holds it own weight as compared to the original version. With the blessing of all parties involved, K-Nel jumps on P-Unit’s hit song “Juu Tu sana” and flips it to “Mbele Tu Sana” and the result is impressive. He even went ahead and recorded a video for the street single. The song ‘Mbele Tu Sana” is the first single off his upcoming street album entitled KenyaWood 2 that will be available for FREE download on 28 April 2009.

I’ve said time and time again that doing quality street albums and mixtapes is a sure way of establishing your street credibility and getting your name out there. You however have to make sure that you deliver a presentable package with the covers and song quality on point. I don’t really understand when artists have like 10 “singles” out and the label can’t even put out a compilation album or street album for the artist. K-Nel understands the essence of mixtapes and street albums, something I have been trying to convince a couple of Kenyan artists to embrace. Only time will tell !!!!!!

Brand New: P-Unit Feat Chidi Benz – Posa

image courtesy of Chidi Benz & DJ Dona

When I got this song on my email from my Tanzania contacts last Wednesday, I was Like P- Unit Feat Chidi Benz. Ok. I was just curious to listen to the final product. The song had no title and I have to thank Facebook and The P-Unit Crew since I was told the song was called “Posa”. Is it just me but the title should have been “Acha Mimi” which was the part of the chorus that stuck in my head.

Now the quality is not all that good , but it’s still workable. My contacts sent me 96Kbps and my advice- TO ALL ARTISTS: is Please send us at least 128Kbps quality mp3’s and clearly label them .

We at Getmziki are all about introducing the people to new talent from across the Africa Continent and Chidi Benz represents that good quality consistent music. I have been following Chidi Benz career for a while now and if you haven’t listened to his past hit singles just check out the current street anthem “Dar Stand Up” or the song “Bado Umenuna” Featuring Marlaw and I’m sure when you do you will be like “Getmziki” is where I get my latest music.

The song is a Mandugu Digital productions which speaks volumes of their productions. The beat was on point and on the first listen the chorus was on point. The song is a sure club hit but I didn’t really hear any strong punchlines or lyrics to make me go like “OK” or even press the rewind button again. On the flip side the collabo is great and unique in its own way.

Brand New: P-Unit – Juu tu Sana

Some brand new heat from P-Unit and their lead super producer Musyoka (Dr. Dre wa Kenya). Am conflicted about the whole style at approach, considering am an avid Musyoka fan and P-Unit fan, I feel like this song has missed the plot for me. Musyoka is a super producer – that’s not the issue, but I think this beat was not meant for P-Unit that’s just my opinion.

Ever since Kenya decided to adopt the Southern style, there have been some hit and misses, some of the more notable ones are akina Madtraxx Boda Boda, and akina Tshazi and Abbas tracks amongst others. I am not sure about this as a budding genre for Kenyan urban music either way I strongly believe that the life cycle of these tracks is very short lived and eventually either all these artists will fall off or they will have to re-define themselves.

This song deserves to be with some US artist, the beat is too western and I don’t think it will make it as a club banger.. but I’ve been wrong before so you never know.

So I retract my comments – this song eventually ended up being one of the biggest songs in 2008 // the theme title track became a national slogan… As Musyoka Noted somewhere on the comments below.. GAME yao iko Juu, iko Juu tu Sana!!

P-Unit feat DNA – UNA

Paukwa – Pakawa, Jomino of course… I’ve tried to feature P-Unit prominently on this site through out certain segments. Their music style and technique to me seems to spread faster than the ebola virus. Which is funny when I read an article on the Daily nation about their career, and how they only have to hits on the market and seem to be making so much noise and publicity. To date they are known for Si Lazima and Kushoto Kulia.

But the reality to me especially after listening to this track is that they are here to stay. Especially now more than ever, after Musyoka signed them to his new record label and recording studio. (If you all remember Musyoka he is the super producer who works at the Fridge at Homeboyz Studios). Musyoka apparently has set up his own studio can record label called Decimal Records Inc. after completing some Engineering courses in the US (New York actually).

Lets Enjoy this music roller coaster because these cats will be here to stay. I watched an interview with them and Chao from Urban nights Capital FM… and I was thoroughly amused. They seem to have good charisma, good attitude, and most importantly seem to have fun doing what they do.

Frasha (P-UNIT) – Manze!

P - Unit

One of the few things that sucks about finding Kenyan artists or talent is that there isn’t enough information out there about any particular artist. In fact our biggest name in the game – Nameless doesn’t even have a website or a sensible myspace… (am sure some guy somewhere went and created space for him – I am yet to see his profile on Facebook either). Anyway my point here is artists don’t take their careers to the next level as they should.

However earlier this month there was a youthful meaningful attempt by Noni (the P-Unit innovator),one of the longest serving entertainers in Kenya – http://www.noninimusic.com/. Although as of today, the site seems to be down. I’d guess there are some internal issues, but the reality is that there was some good amount of time and expertise spent in implementing that site and putting up songs and images for users to download at a dollar fifty (that’s the part I didn’t agree with – kutupa mbao viriski)

I hope the site comes back because its the only resource I had to get any information on FRASHA (a P-Unit member) and also any information I may need on Nonini himself. I like this song a lot, not only because Musyoka produced it, but because Frasha’s delivery on the track is very impressive. “Juu mimi pia manze huwa na ma manzi wana nipandisia mpaka nataka kuandika ma verse”

Si Lazima : P-Unit feat Nonini

si lazima

Its rather obvious what this song means once you listen to it a couple of times. Its a classic club banger in Kenya, and its had the industry buzzing for a few months now. P-Unit are proteges of Nonini, his camp – well groomed soldiers I must say. You will be seeing them here for a a while and a lot more new material that they have. Needless to say Si Lazima is one of those tracks you will want to listen to over and over again.
