By now most people should know who French Montana is. If you don’t its only gonna be a matter of time before u start hearing his music on mainstream outlets, since he just got signed to Akons Konvict music a couple of weeks ago. French Montana was born in Morocco and now currently lives in New York. In 2002 at the age of 18 he created the “Cocaine City DVDs” where he showcased his music and videos but soon also started showcasing other artists interviews and studio recording sessions. What started as a medium for him to get a buzz soon generated into one of the best selling street Dvds and increased his fan base to a greater level. French has flooded the streets with various mixtapes, including “Live from Africa,” “In Demand” and “Laundry Man”. His musical journey should serve as a template for artists trying to penetrate the US market or get things poppin on an international scale.

First, In todays music industry, generating a street buzz is the key. Artists sometimes caught up in the mentality that all I have to do is get my song some spins on the radio and I have a deal. Those days are gone. Major labels today, don’t sign you because you have a hot song. If you have a hot song, a street buzz, and a small following then they can start looking at you. French Montana got a deal with no “major” air play on radio.
Second, don’t limit your catalog to only cds. Nowdays artists are jumping into using DVD’s and magazines as another outlet for getting their material out there.
